What Breed Is She? Alaska's DNA Reveal 🐶🧬

By Alisha Navarro
Alaska's DNA results are in!

When we adopted Alaska, we were told she was a Labrador/Border Collie mix. And honestly? It made total sense. At about 4 years old, she’s sleek, smart, and obsessed with fetch. (She goes wild when she hears a can of tennis balls pop open!)

She learns fast, seems to understand everything we say, and is just the kind of dog who makes you believe she might secretly speak English.

With her black coat, white blaze, bouncy energy, and soulful eyes, we figured the "Lab/Collie mix" guess was spot-on. In the end, her genetics didn't matter a ton, she's still the bestest girl with the prettiest face (plus she's a gorgeous model for our Dog Collars and Freedom Harness!)

But curiosity got the best of us—so we turned it into a little game.

We posted her photos and asked people to guess on social media.

We tried Google Lens. We even asked ChatGPT. And then… we took the DNA test.

The Guesses Were In:

Google Lens said: Borador (a mix of Border Collie and Labrador)

ChatGPT guessed: Labrador, Border Collie, Pit Bull, maybe some Boxer or Cattle Dog

Us? We were still sold on Lab/Collie, with maybe a twist of something else.  Her retrieving and "herding" behavior totally fit this theory.

But nothing prepared us for the real results.

🧬 The DNA Test Said...

Alaska is a true original! Here's her official breakdown:

Guard Dogs (42%)

  • 27% American Pit Bull Terrier

  • 9% Doberman Pinscher

  • 2% American Staffordshire Terrier

  • 2% Boxer

  • 2% Bulldog

Sporting Dogs (40%)

  • 31% Labrador Retriever

  • 5% Golden Retriever

  • 4% Weimaraner

Asian & Oceanian (8%)

  • 5% Siberian Husky

  • 2% Chow Chow

  • 1% American Akita

Mountain Dogs (7%)

  • 7% Saint Bernard

Herding Dogs (3%)

  • 3% Australian Cattle Dog

That's a lot of dog packed into one playful pup!

What’s It Like Living With Alaska?

Turns out what we thought was "herding" behavior is possibly "guarding" behavior!  She sleeps downstairs, in front of the stairs, and is most comfortable when all of her humans are in one place together.

With the focus of a Retriever, the loyalty of a guard dog, the intelligence of all of these breeds, and the heart of a snuggle bug. One thing’s for sure: she keeps us on our toes and laughing every single day.

She also happens to be a fantastic model for our collars and Freedom No-Pull harnesses. Whether she’s running through the mud or posing for treats, she makes every product look good—because they’re made to handle dogs just like her.
